As nice as that blue Schwinn is, after riding that gravel trail with it, I got a strong reminder as to why I only ever saw those coaster brake bikes going downhill, and not uphill. So, just like the pioneers of klunking, my next bike is going to have a few upgrades to make it a more capable klunker. I've got this X-53 frame that I plan to throw together with as many rusty black parts as I can, but instead of keeping it single-speed like I originally planned, I'm planning on adding more gears, thanks to some parts I can pull off some some freebie mountain and 10-speed bikes I have in storage. How many gears I add will depend on how good the bike looks without the chain guard. I'm saving this build for the start of next year when the 2025 Off-Road Build Off begins.

I always have gears on my Klunkers in the form of Nexus 3 speed coaster brakes. I get my wheel sets from cheap 3 speed cruisers. And if you want to Ichi Bike makes 9, 10, and 11 tooth skiptooth sprockets for them. 1/2 inch sprockets are available from 17 to 23 tooth.

I actually have a few 3-speed coaster brake wheels and hubs, but I'm going to need more gears than that. I could pair my Dana 3-speed bicycle transmission with a 3-speed hub for more gears, but I'm saving that for another build, plus it might be too heavy...

I honestly never bother with skiptooth gears and chain. It's easier and less expensive for me to just use standard gears and chain. Plus I can go to any Walmart and buy a new single-speed chain when I need it, instead of trying to make one good skiptooth chain out of several worn-out and hard-to-replace links.

Nexus also makes a 7 speed coaster brake hub. You don't find them that often on "cheap" bikes though.
