'Lil Knee Scuffer
Hey guys I’m clinton and kind of new with vintage bikes. I bought an 80’s Murray beach cruiser a few weeks ago and have been cleaning it up. The handle bars are full foam. I was told only schwinn had full foam handle bars, is this true? Are my handle bars not original? Everything else on the bike is original, besides maybe tires but they are made in Taiwan so have to be close.

For some odd reason the foam bar wrap was THEE thing to have. You could get the stuff at any store that sold generic bike parts. Not sure if your bike came with it or not, but I'm sure Schwinn didn't have a patent on that stuff. I picked up a late 80's Schwinn cruiser 5 speed that had that foam on the bars and the first thing I did to it was take it off. Nice chrome underneath so I was happy. ;)

Just did an image search on the Murray's. Seems many of them have the foam wrap.

Awesome that makes sense!!! Thanks for your help!! I know I did an image search too but I wasn’t sure if maybe those people put those bars on them or not. So it won’t hurt originality if I take them off? If I did, do you know where I could find original grips?

I think they are original to the bike.
Along the beach with your girl friend on the bars....
or any girl that said "Sure, Thanks for the lift."
It does keep the chrome nice if you chose to remove it.
Most all the Beach Cruisers had foam on the bars in the 80's

Awesome thanks man that helps a lot!!! So it won’t hurt originality if I were to take the foam off? Do you know where I could find original grips for my Murray?

right here on the CABE.
or eBay.
They may have come with just Foam grips about 4" long.
Hunte/Wilde grips are era correct and easy to find if you like.
The grips are really your preference at this point; not going to affect "Value"
There are a Lot of Murray Montereys still rolling along the beach.
Personally, I think the hubs are better on these than the Bendix 76 that came on the Schwinn at that same time.
Enjoy the Ride.
here's my Murray built Elgin Tiki cruiser.

Nice that bike is freakin awesome!!! Everyone is always on the schwinn bandwagon but I really like the Murray’s, and the fact that hopefully someday they will become more valuable than the schwinn due to them being throwaways back in the day and scrapped. It’s so much harder to find Murray’s in decent shape.
So about the grips how would I find some black hunt/Wilde grips for my cruiser on here?
