Wore out three sets of tires already!
Some recent photos of this Original paint EA = May 26, 1965 J39 Coppertone Stingray that I have a sentimental attachment to.
Back in 2006 I was discussing this bike with my good friend, the late Bill Figatner. I was out here in California and Bill lived in the Chicago area. The story I got was this bike was found in an alley next to a dumpster by a lady in a suburb of Chicago. She took it home and put it on eBay with some crappy photos (which I saved from that auction) on my old computer.
This is the funny thing about Bill. His nickname was “Minty Boxy”, because he always demanded the Best of the Best.
He tells me on the phone that he was able to see the bike at the lady’s house and he decided “not to bid” on the bike because it had a large nick in the paint on the left chain stay. It wasn’t nice enough for him .
Since he was not a player on this auction I decided to bid and came in second losing to a mutual friend of me and Bill.
Later in 2006 I purchased this bike from that mutual friend.
Bill Figatner is famous for many reasons, but the 1997 Liz Fried book on the Schwinn Stingrays is his claim to fame.
On page 6 of acknowledgments Liz says this book is Bill Figatner’s as much as it is mine.
Sorry to disagree with you Bill, but this ‘65 Copper is pretty damn nice!
Factory paint, screens and decals.
OEM tufted white saddle and high loop strut.
Born with dated tires.
The added plus are the two period decals from an era gone by.
Unfortunately we lost a really cool, funny and dedicated Sting-Ray enthusiast in December 2011 at the young age of 54.
RIP my friend and I love this chippy Sting-Ray that you passed on. LOL.
Chris
