Hello,

I have a 1947 Raleigh rod brake bicycle. The front wheel measures 24 inches across, but the tire says 26. Is this bike a 26 inch bicycle?

Yes - nominally it is a "26" inch because you measure from tread-to-tread across to get the nominal number. Keep in mind that "26 inch" number is a rough estimate and that the ISO bead seat diameter size is more precise when buying tires.

Thanks for the info!

They could well be 590mm 26 x 1 3/8. But double check your existing tires or post a picture of the bike here to see. There were a couple other 26 inch sizes used, but they are less common.

If you still have tires, they will tell you what size you need. Be sure to consult with Sheldon Brown, since bike tire sizes are truly arcane lore.
