HARPO

Cruisin' on my Bluebird
Well, in a moment of weakness (stupidity 🥺), I purchased not one, but three GIRLS Raleigh bikes. All were owned by the same family since new, and all are in various states of "sitting in the basement untouched for years" as I was told. I'm a sucker for one owner bikes, and these weren't that far from my house.

Another Facebook listing, the woman started them off at such a ridiculous price that they sat there. I liked the fact that two of the bikes had nice looking Brooks B72's on them, along with the harder to find pedals on the Superbe. So, I contacted her, explaining the volume of work needed (and missing parts like the rear rack on the Superbe and key and pumps). What is on the bikes are all original parts, including the dried out tires. Paint overall is in really nice condition.
I offered her what I thought was a fair price for what they were, and she accepted immediately (basically what the two saddles and one pair of Superbe pedals are worth). She just wanted them gone as she was cleaning house and needed them all gone in one pickup. She had even just listed them on Craigslist the day I contacted her again, and she said she was getting crazy calls about people wanting them delivered).

I never really looked to close when I went to get them, but told her you could basically date the bikes by the rear hub markings. Well, it threw me when I looked at just the one hub. It's marked "69 14". Since when do we have 14 months in a year?! 🤣. I'll assume it was a stamping that should have been a 1 or a 4.

Anyway, here they are. Something to play with on these cold winter months (but in my warm house).

Nothing wrong with taking in old Raleigh three speed bikes. The Colt is probably a parts bike. There is not much of a market for smaller ladies' frames. The taller of those bikes actually has somewhat of a following. It's not a large following but I've seen a few want ads over the years specifically for a medium or taller ladies' frame for older riders who want something easier to mount. The condition on both looks pretty good, as with so many ladies basement bikes. I took in one such bike from a relative about 2 years ago (1974 ladies' Sports), which will end up being a parts bike.

Yes, the Colt will be used for parts, specifically the rear carrier that will go onto the Superbe.

Nice thing also is that every rim is in such nice condition. It will take some work to get them up to where I'm happy, but I have time (nice thing about being retired)! I also have extra parts to use. And the saddles are in really nice shape, which was the main reason for the purchase in the first place. 😀

I've had a hub stamped 69 14 before. It was on a ladies Sports. Found it odd at the time but have seen a few now. Maybe February of '70? Haha

This is on the ladies Superbe... 😆

I've begun work on the Superbe, and I must agree with the original owner that the bikes were kept in their basement and not in a garage or shed. "Always indoors" she told me. Under all the dirt she was right!

As I started to clean the original Dunlop tires (which, BTW, still hold air) I looked closely and discovered that are soft and pliable, without any cracking! 😀 Pretty amazing for tires from 1969.

What did split in areas are the grey rubber grips. I have other Raleigh black ones, but since I'd like to keep the bike as original as possible, I've used clear Gorilla Glue on them. They're drying now with tape keeping them compressed. They should be fine. And the paint is cleaning up better than expected.

I've also reattached the shifter cable, which for some crazy reason back then was completely taken apart. Weird. 🤪

Nice score Harpo! I figure you have close to $100 in the wheel reflectors...

I had no idea that these were worth anything (unless you're kidding). Generally, these get tossed as the years go by to make them look less "dorky".

Truth be told... I paid $150 for all three bikes. The woman I purchased them from said she sell them to me at that price if I picked them all up at one time. No problem! 😛
