I'm the Wiz, and nobody beats me!
Aaah, good to know the year.
... But if I have anything to say about it... And I do, this old girl with be dissembled, cleaned, made presentable and most likely hung from the ceiling in the shop.
It will start tomorrow.
I already ordered a repro headlamp lens. :)
I know, "Of all people," I'm the vintage bike guy in the shop and they were all in agreement that we should give it a sympathetic once over, hang it, and put a ridiculous price on it so it will bring people (and more old bikes) into the shop.

Here's a nice reference for some details when you start reassembling. Note the 2 cable clips on the down tube and the cool fender skirting. 😉

Oh, that's nice to see, thanks.
This had one cable clip and the cable was taped on the rest of the way, so I guess I'm missing one or two. One strange thing is that the forward chainguard clamp has a piece that sticks out unlike others I've seen. This chainguard also has a chain stay leg attachment rather than attaching to the seat stay as in the pic. It's obviously the original chainguard.
I'll get to that on reassembly though.
It is cleaning up well but will still be a patina rider. The brake cable is a bit jacked up. It may not work. On the plus side, the brake shoes are still pretty good.
Id like to know more about the rear fender skirt stuff. Is it just string, bailing wire, twine... ? What is laced there? It kinda seems there is something missing. Are there any instructions for this or other models?

Here are pics of a '41 BFG Hollywood I had. Mine had twine and there is a special piece attached to the axle with a big loop to thread the lacing through.

Were there eyelets in the fender holes? It seems string or twine would be cut by the fender metal if not cushioned in some way.
Seeing those axle loops, I've seen those before. Probably pretty rare stuff. I could make those but since the bike isn't really mine and it will eventually find a new owner, I'll leave a few things for the next guy. My budget is $100 to get it presentable and the light lens and fork key took a lot of that, the rest is cleaning chemicals.

Truly, I'm just lightly cleaning and greasing. It's not in super condition, just a lot better than most I've seen this old.
That Hollywood would be it's much better looking sister... :)

Ok, Here's as far as I go.
I'll take it down to the shop either later today or tomorrow, so I thought Id get some uncluttered shots of it before it's presented to the manager. Honestly, I'm not sure they are going to like it. But I do. I think they may be expecting it to be in better condition visually. We'll see....
It was completely disassembled. All of the steel and chrome had been painted with alumacote MANY years ago, so I stripped all of it off except under the seat. Everything was cleaned, greased and oiled. Somewhere along the line a rubbing compound was used and not removed completely. There are still signs of it here and there, but most came off. Unfortunately it was heavily rubbed with it I guess because there is a lot of fading to the pin striping.
It had been maintained. Front and rear wheel bearings are great, no galling. Bottom bracket the same. Brake shoes are good and the handbrake works although the cable is at the end of its adjustment. The light and horn innards are rusty and missing a couple parts so they wont be working without some attention. Original chain is a bit stretched but is good to go otherwise. The pedals cleaned up nicely.
I bought a new headlamp lens (plastic repro) because I dont like the look without it.
The fork lock works and has an original AS/Yale Key.
Front tire is a Sears Allstate and is lightly cracking but is nice, new tube.
Rear tire is the OG Royal chain in the same condition as the front, new tube
I added some metal valve stem caps to keep it looking period.
The rims were disassembled. Insides have very little rust, both rims are very solid.
All original spokes and nipples came off nicely and cleaned up well
I rubbed a couple dents out of the rear fender with a serving spoon, cant even tell, but I left the front alone.
The seat post is a bugger. It will come out, but not by me. I was able to loosen and tap it down a scoshe but it wont grab and come out. I left the seat alone.
The only thing I had to fix up was the chain guard. It has a made-up rear bracket strap and 3 new bolts. Had to do a bit of straightening also.
One thing that annoyed me was the fork legs having one side open and one side closed. What a pain...uhg.
Over-all, it rides fine. No noise, and pretty much what one would expect from a 41' model bike.
I kinda like it. If It were a boys model, I think I would use my discount at the shop and keep it.
We'll see how it's received at the Collective later.
Fingers crossed.

Looks good!
I’m sure it will be well received by some, down at the collective.
Unfortunately, our sisters of the species haven’t embraced patina the way we have, so most of the women who look at it, will think it’s seen better days, and they will gravitate towards the shiny new electric bike across the way.
But!
There are some, ladies out there that will love it, just the way it is, and they will want it, no doubt!
Just price it accordingly, so that the one who loves it, can afford it, and it should find a worthy owner.

One thing I'm afraid of is that it's worth more in parts than whole. That's part of the consideration when the shop evals a bike. It's still a business and bills must be paid.
I'm hoping they'll use it as a show piece hanging it in the air but it's condition is an issue there.
If it has to go, I'll try to find a new owner whole first.
