Casual dreamer

Finally riding a big boys bike
This a picture of my great grandfather and great grandmother, not sure of the date but my mom thinks early 50s. They lived in Newcomersville Ohio at that time. That was his schwinn in the backround, I would guess it is a cycleplane but I'm not sure. My mom says she wouldn't be surprised if that bike is still in Ohio somewhere!

Back in the early 90s I was restoring a 1934 Schwinn Aerocycle.
I read as much as possible with regards to Schwinn bikes of this period.

"In the 30s aviation was becoming popular with the deeds of Lindbergh
and Amelia Earhart.
The 1934 Streamline Aerocycle, Model 34, was one of the first offspring of
bicycle/aviation theme.

The Aerocycle was highly desired model, but the high cost and the "30s
Depression" kept sales lower than hoped.
Schwinn eventually came up with the model known as the "Cycleplane".

Borrowing several styling elements from the more expensive Aerocycle, the Cycleplane sold well.

Here are two examples. I'm no expert on these bikes, whether they are accurate or if the parts are correct.
I merely wanted to show you a better image of a bike similar to yours.
The photo with your great grandparents is great.

Thanks for posting this with this info! I was unsure what model schwinn it was. I would love to have one in my collection!

Every now and then, they come up.
Saw one at the local flea market.
I was late and someone had snatched it
earlier. Paid $250. It was complete original.
I saw it before the new owner took it away.
Thinking back... I should have waited to talk
with the new owner and get his phone in case
he wanted to sell it then or later.
Most of the old bikes I have found were at antique
car shows and estate sales.

I did find an original Shwinn Phantom at a new
bike shop.
The kid working there saw my old bike I was
riding and mentioned that his uncle gave him
a "peewee Herman" bike.

I wasn't too excited about that one, but during
the conversation, he added that it was heavy
and looked exactly like my phantom.
That started me thinking.
This kid was referring to all bikes from the past
as "peewee Herman".
Someone had done a poor spray paint job.
Underneath was the nice chrome fenders.
I bought it at a good price and gently removed the
spray paint to reveal a mid 50s Red Phantom.
He was happy to sell it because , "it's too heavy and doesn't have any speeds!"
