Canuck

Look Ma, No Hands!
Found another bike in another shed on one of my great grandfathers properties. Schwinn excelsior in red and black. Also took a picture of the serial number on the bottom bracket. Any idea what year this would be? This one I have given to a friend who is a fellow bikeaholic and who always lends a hand when bike issues come up.

Also took a number of additional pictures of the chrome huffy (probably a huffy) I posted in my last thread. Unfortunately I was not able to find a serial number on this one. This one I am keeping to be ridden and my 10 yr old wants to help me rebuild it.

How many cool bikes are in this barn! Is there a secret room thats undiscovered with a bluebird and aerocycle inside too?! Nice!

I may come by my love of bikes naturally. Before I came across the HD, Pierce, this Schwinn and Huffy (?), I already had 12 or so bikes in my garage (road, cyclocross, mountain bike), used by my kids, wife, and myself. Apparently the “problem” with bikes ran in the family.

The serial number on that Black/Red Schwinn was stamped 1/12/1950. It's been updated with a 1959+ chain guard and wire carrier, probably off a Jaguar.

so Based on the serial number it looks like it is a 1950 Schwinn from Chicago. Based on the offerings in 1950, I’d guess a black phantom that is missing the headlight and the tank?

Thanks GTs58. Beat me to it. I’d just found out the build date associated with the serial number. Thanks for the info in the updated chain guard and wire carrier. Any information on what is right in the bike or not is appreciated.

I think that could have been any one of the B models. Fenders have also been replaced and possibly the crank. Obviously the pedals are not correct.

Chrome huffy underwent an acid bath and rebuild and repacked all bearings. Cleaned up well with very little effort. Red and black Schwinn currently enjoying a acid soak, and then will rebuild that one as well. Suspect this second one will be more work and time intensive.

So let’s say I was racing a friend of my son tonight on my bike, which I was winning of course. And let’s say while utterly destroying that 9 yr old my chain snapped in half on the chrome bike above, unfortunately leading to the 9 yr old overtaking me and mistakingly thinking he had won, which he hadn’t. Would the KMC 410 be the appropriate replacement chain?

I have a 9 yr old that needs to be put in his place.

The 410 brown would be the go to replacement but there are some others like silver and black, nickel or silver and a color for just a few bucks more.
