This is the exact same set-up that came in the kit to change the countertop demonstrator from the down-tube shifters to the stem. As you said I bet these AB116 conversion kits were popular during that time when customers saw the stem shifters and wanted to change their bikes.

Is the Downtube shifter adapter identical to the actual shifter parts with just a pulley inserted inside instead of the actual lever? Do you have an exploded picture of all the parts on the adapter?
Hi GTs58,
Here are some pictures of one of the adapters pulled apart. From what I see, a few of the parts are the same as the shifter but some of the components are unique. The pulley wheel replaces the shift lever, a flat head machine screw replaces the wing nut, a cylindrical ferrule replaces the "bullet" ferrule and the chrome cover is notched with a "V" shape to accommodate the cable. The plastic item on the right is just a keeper to hold everything together. The Malloy mug was a gift from my wife. I've always been a hugh Martin Milner fan and while watching an episode of Adam-12, I noticed Pete Malloy enjoying a cup of coffee from a mug with his name on it. I thought it was cool so the next thing I know, this mug shows up at our door! I have a great wife.
