Ok, first time requested for serial number verification help. This is a Schwinn Varsity 10 Speed ,,,, early 70's guess ,,, IDK was told to me when a bought it for 50$

Nice looking varsity. JR serial number looks to be september 1980

Actually, since you're 'Schwinn lover' you need to know. The date made on frame is not the same as issued. That is most likely a 1981. You will find 4 numbers on the badge. Those are the actual day and year the bike was made. It's the Julian date code. 1st 3 numbers are the day of year, example; if 001, that's Jan 1. If 364 then December 31. the last number, in your case, is likely a 1 (1981) B/C the frames were made months before built, paint, parts and decals may differ from previous year or model.

IDK about 1984-? but in 1973 or 4, to early 80's it's horizontal like yours and in early- mid 1990's to 2002 bankruptcy it's vertical. Schwinn changed placement or angle every 10 years. So, it's really, if you know to look on badge and understand Julian date code , easy to nail the exact day and year made.

That's a good buy at $50! A lot of CL people seem to think '70s - '80s lightweights are automatically worth $175+...
