GM Sir this is my 38 crank
On my 40 blue bike has the same crank as yours, so I went with dated Musselman wheel set which is a 40

Ok my thoughts! I believe Shawn is probably correct on the 39 springer notion . Only that 39 was the last year for straight down tube like @mrg s ride so I’m guessing Shawn s is a 40 like my blue bike. Here’s a few pics of my original 38 as found it even had original red tubes when it came into my life.

If you're positive yours is a '38 then this is the last year for the straight down tube. I have '37 lit showing a straight down tube but my '39 lit shows the curved down tube. I don't have anything from '38.

I pretty sure no one really knows for sure. I was looking at @sm2501 bike and @mrg s ride both straight down tube. This is the reason I believe mine is a 38 . I was thinking you were correct on the 39 first year springer notion

I know in 41 they used both straight and curved down tubes on different models, curved on the more deluxe ones.

Out of 4 models in the 41 Western Tire & Auto catalog only the Golden Zephyr ( W T & A Endurance badge ) had a curved down tube, the other 3, 2 tank and one standard model had straight down tubes but sometime off brand retailers maybe didn't get all the latest stuff, kinda like with Schwinn, CWC and others, different models showed into 41 with straight down tubes. My GZ is a upgraded Deluxe Equipped Streamlined model so that's why the straight down tube, dbl teardrop sprocket & Silver Shield badge, never wanted to change those.
