Sizing Dust Caps/Hub Caps?

Not sure if I'm in the correct category (?). This is new to me so I need to ask. I have a tricycle/s and I need to know how do you go about measuring for the correct Rear Wheel Dust Cover, even if it's not the correct one (year), but one that will fit? What do I look for when searching? I do know it's a 12 spoke, but what else do I need to know?
Sorry for the uneducated question, but like I said...it's new to me.
