The commie built Diamont has this brake. Clamp on frame or fork. It might be a Weinmann, I can’t read the embossed name and I can’t remember for sure. No fork drilling for a brake is required. These work better than any modern side pull. I rate them excellent. It might be because of the large clamping area and beefiness of the brakes that causes real stiffness.
The Gloria and Claud Butler use a 1950-60s Universal. It has a retro look the right reach/drop. You have to have a drilled fork. These really help make the ride easier, but I would only rate them as good.
Sometimes vintage Raleigh brakes have the right drop and are steel so they look good enough on old fixed gear bikes. You have to have a drilled fork. I would rate these as very helpful, but only as poor.
I also use 30-60s Phillips clamp on brakes. No drilled fork is required. These work well with vintage fixed gear. Better than most modern center pull. Again because they are beefy and have a large more secure mount than those mounted with a bolt through the fork. The return springs are amazing, never any rubbing on the rim or adjustments to keep them centered.
Schwinn also made a clamp on front brake in the 1950s for their forged flat forks. No drilled fork required. Rate as almost useless, horrible.
Thats solid, useful info., thanks. I like the looks of the old clamp on Phillips center pull, and, have heard different opinions regarding effectiveness. I want to run front only on 34 Humber road racer, fixed / free, flip flop. Correct(ish) vintage looks with reasonable stopping power, is what Im after. Thanks again,,,,,,,,,
