Before the leather I was thining a rack mounted Whoville holiday village scene.

Or the start of one of these!

Having so much fun building this tool box. Going to make another one like it. Thinking maybe with an Indian on the side of it. This will be fastened to the bike like the old pre war hanging tanks, only to the bottom bar, under the tank. The inside will be lined with continuous 3" sheet metal around the edges. Also, the leather will be hardened to prevent any collapse issues of the rounded corners. This tank-like tool box will go on the 46 Ranger I'm putting together. I dyed the Ranger saddle Black, but I'm thinking the tank should be brown, like the old Ranger colors. I do like black though.....can't decide......🤔

Got all the pieces stained. I'll let them dry overnight and maybe assemble tomorrow. It took three coats of stain. Could have done better around the letters. It's hard to be consistent with the stain around the lettering. The flap was a problem too. It's a different leather than the body. It's twice as heavy and did not take the stain as dark. Kinda looks distressed, which may be ok. Going to be some screws and fasteners showing. I'm using some old Erector set slotted head machine screws to hold the leather to the inside metal frame and some distressed fasteners to hold it together. It will look like it was made way back when. The thin strap is for a snap to hold the flap secure in the center. It will be stitched on, to look old school. There will be two straps on the top, like the old hanging tanks. The stain is dark brown......should have done the black.

Done! Turned out great......except for the stain job..... I could bore everyone with a lengthy explanation of what I did wrong. Another mistake I will never repeat again. The stain was supposed to be consistent, like the Ranger saddle. [below ],

but I did what I usually do and "try something" midstream. The result was it looks like it's been hanging on a bike in a barn [with a leaky roof] for the last 50 years. Ok, if one likes patina, but I wasn't trying for that.

OH, sorry.....that was our Thanksgiving turkey. How'd that get in here?

I used old Erector Set metal for the frame, as well as the old style slotted screws. Worked fantastic. It's very sturdy and the leather is hard, like cardboard. It's built to last and was supposed to hang from the lower top bar of the 46 Ranger. Might make another one.

If anyone wants to try this, here's what the frame looks like:

Very rigid. The inside dimensions are 3" X 3" x 13". Plenty of room inside. Going to take a break from leather and work on the Marx train layout. As always, Have fun!
