It's odd that this is the first one of my AW hubs that I can recall doing this. Maybe this one has more wear on it?
 
I will say I am not familiar with the later AW coaster hubs, which may have a better design with a slight taper on the pins and clutch driver. You may be right that they are slightly worn.
Always allow for a small amount of indicator chain to still be able to be pulled out of the axle when you have the shifter set in 1st gear. About 1/16th" or slightly less.
If not, when you are in 3rd, it could slip out of gear even easier..

Thank you all, I suspect it has some worn parts. I have the same hub in an older Corvette that is rock solid.
