I’ve been working a lot recently and haven’t had much time for bicycle hunting, but earlier this week I was on my way to Ohio to pick up an early twenties Schwinn made Deluxe Flyer. My plan was to stop and see some friends in the Dayton area. I decided to check the Craigslist ads of all places and I found this one listed four months ago and a couple things stood out to me right away.
I asked the seller for some extra photos of the headbadge area and if there were any holes in that area. He said no holes or badge and he sent over these photos.
The lugs, the chainring, and that orange paint under the black sealed the deal for me. All original sans the pedals and fenders. The stem was broken long ago, but I think it’s repairable. I decided to add the extra three hour drive on to my trip and 40 miles from where it was made in Middletown, Ohio, is where she was found, in Covington, Kentucky. A Flying Merkel. I’ve spent about fifteen hours getting the black paint off and I’ve made some progress.
With some insights on transfer preservation I’ve been able to preserve the transfers and pin stripes pretty well. A huge thank you to
@Freqman1 for the help with this… your advice worked exceedingly well, thank you, sir. The rims still have their original paint in places too. A huge thank you to all the contributors on the Miami Cycle/Merkel thread, if it wasn’t for that thread and the history uncovered and SHARED I never would have given that dirty black bike a second look.
