Mercian

I live for the CABE
Hi All,

The search continues for other parts for my 1917 Columbia 'Military Model'.

I would like to find the correct pattern of carrier for it. I'm afraid I don't know the make (though it could be Standard / Persons'). If you can identify it, that would be helpful.

I have seen several similar, but none the same for sale yet.

Below, an original photo of the rack I'm looking for.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Scott,

Thanks for keeping an eye open for this.

You're right, the devil is in the detail here.

Because of the short specification time involved, I'm sure it must have been an off the shelf item, but 100 years adds rarity to even common pieces.

Best Regards,

Adrian

Don't despair Adrian, one will turn up! It would be interesting to find out what parts company actually made these racks. I agree with Boz, these likely were an accessory that could bought from a supply house in the US market.

I have a bunch of old bicycle parts catalogs that I will look through to see if I can identify the manufacturer.

Found it! Or very close to it.

In the old Walthour & Hood Co. Catalog. The rack is very close to the No. 5 carrier or the Wald luggage carrier. I don't have the year of the catalog but my guess is the late teens early 20s.

Hi Boz, Brant.

Thanks for doing the research (-:

The 15 looks very different, but the 5 and 'Wald luggage Carrier' both look like variations where the rack and legs are the same, just, as Brant said, the hinged front area varies.

It would make sense if it was a Wald piece, since I understand that the original handlebars were Wald too.

Happy Hunting!

Best Regards,

Adrian
