Cruisin' on my Bluebird
Howdy folks! When this 1917 Westfield roadster was originally offered on Deal or No Deal, there was a bunch of understandable concern and questions around the top bar mounted bracket (circled in yellow below). I don't know how I knew, but I was convinced that it was factory and served as a mount for something. Flash forward to last night while looking for a good picture of an early Seminole head badge (for which I'm currently on the hunt) and I came across the two catalog pics below in @catfish's media. The bracket in question appears to be the frame mount for a saddle reinforcement bracket for motorized use I'm guessing? Anyhow, If anyone can provide more clarity, whether it be commentary, photos, or basically anything that sheds more light on this aparatus, it's intended use and what's missing from mine, I would be greatly appreciative. Thank you all in advance!

-Lester

Am having multiple loads of difficulty "seeing" how this mechanism functions ... and cannot evade the attendant frustration. May have made a huge mistake in viewing the Monday Eclipse thru a pinhole punched in a paperplate, my backside to the sun ... and using a mirror. Could use a good explantation of "how" that saddle-thing works. Thank You in advance ...... patric

The seat post is spring loaded in the frame. And there are pivot points in the seat frame.

Thank you everyone. More pictures please. I feel like I've seen one of these in a previous life. I know it'll be virtually impossible to obtain what's missing of my setup, but I'd like as clear a representation as I can get to understand what I'm working with.

Great looking bike Lester! In the two catalog shots you posted the strut/brace(?) seems liek it might be round? Could it be a spring piston similar to the ones used behind the seat stays on cushion frame bikes? Somewhere there must be an illustration/ad for those in a catalog. There must be other complete seats with these out there in some motorcycle museum?

Found this photo of a similar (heavier?) style of piston seat suspension on a British motorcycle history site, 1920 Rex.
