On that day I was six years old with no bike living in Linden, TN.

As far as "bad news on the doorstep", a few years later I had a paper route and bicycle in VA...On what could have been a Feb day, we had snow and ice and halfway through my paper route I said, "Screw it!" and dumped the rest of the papers in a ditch and rode/slid home.

My mom came home from her job later that day and the phone began to ring..."Hi, did Mike deliver my paper today?" After the 3rd call she made me get in the car and take her to the ditch so I could deliver what papers I could that were usable...

On the evening of October 4, 1957, I was at Municipal Auditorium, San Antonio, Tx.

But was too young to fully appreciate the fact that in that auditorium were future legends
of Rock & Roll.

Among them, Fats Domino, Chuck Beery ...
and our local boy from Lubbock, Tx.
Charles Hardin Holley.

You knew him as:

And I rode a Western Flyer Deluxe X-53.

Thats a cool story, before my time. Do you remember Buddy Holly playing?

I recall that he was very young and slim but had a powerful voice range
from a soft melody to a full rock & roll beat. He sounded like the
records in the sense that he did not depend on any device to enhance his voice.
An original talent.
The Beatles who were fans later recorded this song.

There was a lot of screaming as you can imagine but he was able to project
above it all. He was that good.
Not sure if this makes sense, you just had to be there, is all I can say.

I remember my dad bringing home the newspaper and reading the
article about the fatal crash.

It was indeed a sad day!

This was the beginning of the end of my youth.
With the death of President Kennedy who came to visit us in '63...
my tour of duty in Vietnam in '65...
my youth was completely gone.
I was fortunate to have made it back ok.

Damn, I was only 5, but I had a Red/White 20" refurbed ballooner. :D What I do remember is the hit song Purple People Eater on my Cousin's radio.

The more that some of the old folks hated it...the more I loved it!
My mom & dad were cool, they liked his music.
I had a small transistor radio that I played while riding my bike.
It wasn't the best accoustics or quality....
but I didn't care... it was Rock & Roll and
it was my "music"!
