Look Ma, No Hands!
Hi, does anyone know what tool is needed to pull the TA cranks from a Schwinn Sports Tourer? The square taper Parks tool that I have doesn't thread onto the crank all the way and when trying to pull, it just seems to strip away the threads. Thanks for any help you can offer.

the T.A. thread is unique at 23.0mm pitch diameter

the common thread, found on "most" cotterless chainsets, is 22.0mm pitch diameter

old Stronglight is unique at 23.35mm pitch diameter
beginning about 1978 this changed to 22.0mm

once you damage the puller threads on an alloy crank arm you are a bit up the creek

one thing you can do is to pull the arm with an automotive gear puller

the Schwinn/Park tool is standard 22.0mm on one end and 23.0mm on the other for use on T.A.

before starting tool in opening make sure threads on arm and on tool are clean
use lubricant so you can easily feel what you are doing
it is possible to cross thread the tool damaging the threads on the arm
the 22.0mm size will wobble about a bit in a T.A. arm

Thanks. This is for a 1971 model Schwinn. So, it sounds like I need to find a crank puller that has 23mm pitch diameter. I think I still have enough threads left since the metal cap that goes on the cranks screwed in just fine. Thanks for your help!!

in cases where the thread damage is not severe it may be possible to chase with a 23.0mm X 1.0 bottoming tap or with a regular 23.0mm X 1.0 tap where you grind down the tip turning it into a bottoming tap

procedure requires care in aligning tap prior to beginning to turn it

if you have the Schwinn or Park badged tool you already have the correct puller thread

I have a park tool, but I thought that was 22mm? Here's the tools I have tried to use - Park Tool ccp-44, pedro's crank extractor, and Park Tool CWP-7. None of them would go all the way into the threads. I made sure I wasn't cross threading and I made sure inner the pusher part of it was all the way out.

Older Park CCP-1 were double sided.

what torque do you typically go by when re-installing the crank back onto the square taper axle?

-----

have never employed a torque wrench for this

been doing it for over fifty year. šŸ˜‰

Wow, 50 years working on bikes is impressive. With my limited knowledge of this, I'd probably want to go by some type of torque spec until I got more comfortable with it.
