okozzy

Wore out three sets of tires already!
I just picked up my first "turn of the century" bicycle and I was wondering what type of finish was put on parts (sprocket, hubs, handlebars, etc.) back in the day?

I am not being able to salvage any of it, it's just peeling right off the parts and it appears thinner and duller than chrome. If it was chrome it appears to be of a lower quality than bikes from the 30's and 40's.

While I'm not familiar with antique bikes I would hazard to guess there was no chrome originally as it wasn't common until the 20's or thereabouts (at least on cars). More likely that the original silver finish was nickel plating.

okozzy,

Uniblab is correct, your bike would most likely have had nickel plating if the bike was manufactured before and including the 1920's. By 1930's most bicycle manufacturers started using chrome plating.

Oh come on guys... we could have had him going there and said it was some really obscure element that's only found with the assistance of lesser known tribes in the south American rainforest...

But yeah, nickel ;)
