So these tires are marked war tire.....the size is a little different then standard 26x2.125 or 26x2.25 etc being 26x2 so what bikes would have used this size during war years? What does the 3 stand for under the x?
I would assume a 2" will as a 1.75" will fit in place of 2.125"; jus' changes the profile some once you start running 2" wider wheels to get the fat tire look on resto mod bikes.
Sheldon Brown once said there are 5 different, incompatible 26 inch rim sizes. He left out the US prewar 26" lightweight rim size (599mm), so there's at least 6. I wonder what else he left out?
My guess is that you are right and they are for balloon rims. 1.75 wouldn't have existed yet. They probably were made undersize to save rubber. On the other hand, if they are for some screwy rim size, that wouldn't totally surprise me either.
I could be wrong but I bet they're standard balloon rim diameter & only 2" wide for rolling resistance or for a little extra clearance but I can only speculate ....
