On Training Wheels
Hello, new member to your forum here. Thank you for having me and thank you for this amazing resource for bicycle lovers! I have found this older bike with no head badge etc. I have contacted a few locals that are into old bikes but I cannot seem to ID it and I was told to try here. Bike has a serial # on bottom of BB shell B06891 with a lone '3' off to the side. Rear hub is New Departure model D. Crank is the schwinn looking heart pattern and is skip tooth. Tire size was 26 inch. Looks similar to some Colson bikes but I am not sure. I have attached photos for reference. Thanks, Eric

Thanks for the information guys. It came with a blown out side wall on the front tire. Someone had added tubeless sealant to the tubes and then must have aggressively inflated it until the sidewall let go. So I slapped on some modern CST 26x 2 on a budget. The nice thing is the logos are small and only show on the non drive side. A compromise for sure but it got it rolling. I've ridden it a mile or so but the hub isn't braking much at all. I've soaked it with thin oil and it started to engage but doesn't stop the wheel. I have some literature on cleaning out the old Model D hub but I haven't tried yet and I do feel a tad intimidated to proceed.

The New Departure hub isn't hard to work on. It's just tedious cleaning all of the discs, takes a little patience layering the discs and aligning them to go back in the hub. It's well worth the time though. Remember, grease the bearings and oil everything else.
