'Lil Knee Scuffer
Hi everyone, it’s been awhile since I posted here. I have since retired and my interests have shifted to restoring and riding 80s steel frame road bikes. I currently have a few restoration projects in the works that I need frameset decals for. With the demise of VeloCal the availability of some brands has also gone with them. I have used SSSink in the past. Their prices are reasonable and the quality is excellent. I have also sourced Schwinn decals from eBay. Currently I have a 1984 Schwinn LeTour Luxe that I’m working on. The original paint is in saveable condition but some decals are shot. I would prefer to buff it out removing the affected decals, apply new decals, and clearcoat. So far I’ve seen only the blue but I haven’t been able to source for the Cocoa Brown paint option - see photos. Can anyone recommend a supplier that might have that set in inventory or could reproduce for reasonable cost? Thank you.

Please do not take this the wrong way.

I did not think I would still be alive when people started restoring Greenville Bikes. It's hard for me to comprehend that these bikes are now 40 years old.

My Grandkids say PaPa your OLD! And, I laugh it off, but seeing a Greenville Bike being restored makes me feel Really Old.

If I have a chance I will look to see if I have any of your requested decals.

If you can't find decals, I'd be happy to make some stencils for you. They wouldn't work for the Chromoly sticker but that looks like it's in really good shape. I'd just need some close up photos of the existing ones and precise size measurements. I find stencils are a great option to decals and water slides because in the end there is almost no hand to them. Application can require being delicate and patient for a 2 color one, but the result with clear over it is hard to beat.

Thanks very much for your reply and offer. I will definitely take you up on making stencils. I agree - I don’t care for the vinyl graphics because of the unnatural thickness. Waterslides can be easily damaged by modern automotive catalyzed clear coats. I currently have 2 applications that you may be able to help me with. I have a complete set of 1993 Specialized Allez graphics that I purchased from SSSink that I haven’t applied yet. I have 2 of those bikes in restoration progress now. What would it cost to make those stencils? I could either photograph them or send you the set as a model. Also, I located a set of graphics for the LeTour Luxe but the vendor is in the UK and I haven’t ordered them yet. What would be the cost to make those stencils from photographs? Thanks so much - let me know if you need further information.

Of the stencils you need, the trickiest one to re-create would be the "le tour luxe" one because it is so cracked. I believe there is a font called Bauhaus that is extremely close, that would speed up that process. Ironically, when re-creating simple 90 degree curves from pieces, it is way harder to get a perfect looking letter than it is to create from nothing. My only question is if the "o" and the "u" touch, or do they keep the same kerning as the rest of the logo?

I'll charge you whatever you think is fair in relation to the cost of the decals you were going to purchase. I'll include doubles of each stencil incase a mistake is made and detailed instructions for best results. The better the photos are, the better the stencils will be.

I was a graphic artist in the surf industry for over 25 years, so you can feel safe that I'll do the best I can. Here's a stencil I made for a parody of the "Love Machine" from Cheech and Chong as a Stingray. Application was not exactly perfect on this because the chain guard had some texture to it as it was kind of beat up to match the actual car. A perfect result, however is possible on a smooth surface.

Thank you so much - that’s a very fair offer. I’d like to take this off-line to spare others from a huge thread. How would you prefer further correspondence?

WOW Love that green. Thats a beautiful resto. A tip on the waterslide decals being softened by catalyzed clear - when you have the base coat finished and the decals applied and they are fully dry - spray a light coat of clear lacquer over them and let it sit a day...scuff the finish of the lacquer to open it up and proceed with your catalyzed clear. That lacquer will protect the decals from the "hot" clear coat. Has worked for me. Hope the helps.

Here’s an image I found online. I adjusted the exposure and cropped for a better look.
