Glenn Rhein

Cruisin' on my Bluebird
Can anyone tell me anything about this Bicycle, sticker says derby cycle.
Seat is not original but it says brooks competition.

Couldn't find anything on the "Derby Cycle Mfg Co" of Birmingham.
The only thing I could find was a 1939 catalogue cover for "Royal Derby" of Birmingham on the V-CC library site.....

1293037

There was also one photo of a roadster model, which I cropped unfortunately.
I wonder if these companies are related, as yours has a crown design above the name?
I'll do a little more digging tomorrow.

does anyone know just how many Derby badges there are?

asking because there was an American chainstore badge current in the 1960's which used the name

one poster wrote that it belonged to a chain of auto supply stores

---

one possible avenue of exploration might be to visit the histories of major Birmingham based producers such as Armstrong & Hercules. cycle manufacturers often owned more than one marque and also did contract work for large stores which had private "house brands."

---

if dnc1 has not found more information this must be one rare marque! ;)

shall look forward to following along

Interesting bike! I've never seen head lugs like those. And is that a riveted chain wheel and a skip-tooth chain? If I had to guess, I'd guess pre-war.

;)

integral headsets were big BITD

this one is almost sure to be either Brampton or Thomas D. Cross & Sons Limited

races may be of the floating U type which take 1/8" ball

chainwheel is not riveted, but rather bolted

bolts may have square heads

---

a check of a Brampton Fittings Limited catalgoue available at V-CC library in PDF format appears to show the machine's lugs, crown and headset...

Still no info forthcoming.
Not only is it probably pre war, but also probably pre 1929 given that the fork crown is nickel plated.
