Looks like it had a hole drilled in the backside for an extra battery source. Factory does not have that. Just works off the side switch and is self-contained w/2 D-cells

There were two models , one self contained battery and this one that the wire went to another wire from the tank . The two wires plug together , this light is missing the little plug at end of the wire It’s original

The inside looks really clean, because it hasn’t had batteries dying in it for the past 70 years.
I’ve been working on a fair number of old lights lately and I want to point out one feature that is often overlooked. The reason there is a flexible tab behind the bulb in this lamp is to allow you to focus the beam by screwing it in and out in relationship to the reflector.
They could have just used a standard fixed screw in lamp base but they included this flexible tab to allow for some adjustment of the beam’s focus.
