My GT MTBMX project that I found on Sunday is starting to look fun!🤓

Since becoming addicted to riding pump tracks with my Framed 29er I've been wanting to build a bike with 26" wheels. I found a '91 GT Talera at the bike co-op in Ft. Collins with long enough droputs & chromoly front triangle and some parts to begin. It will be for pump track & thrashing around town fun bike. Did a quick removal of parts & mock up that evening.

I got the crank installed later. Being down the rabbit hole of picking a new 26" bmx bike & starting research on dirt jump bikes leads me to want Maxxis DTH tires. But this being a GT I thought their Smoothie tires would be perfect for this build. Good thing I measured clearance in the silly U-brake as there wasn't room for a 2.5" tire.

I've had a set of Bontrager Hank tires collecting dust for a while that are 2.2" wide. Minimal clearance with wheel at front of the drops.

They also look great with the rest of the bike! I think the Hanks have found a home. 🙂

Since the suspension fork needs more threads cut on the steer tube, cut to length & fiddled with to make as stiff as possible on my GT MTBMX I decided to throw on a new bmx fork to see how it looks.

A quick progression to where this is now from where I started a couple days ago.

The head tube angle in stock form is 68.5°. I didn't measure the angle with the suspension fork but it lifted the front end to help stabilize the steering a bit more on a short frame. My hope is it will help move my weight over the rear wheel for pump track riding.

I really like the bmx fork on this!! It actually lowered the front end for a 71° head angle similar to bmx bikes for quick handling. It also shortens the wheelbase & makes the bike lighter to build on the handling.

Face lift time for this 41 Westfield built Elgin. It has hung in my shop for a few years now. This one had been repainted at sometime in it's life, with fenders that were not original. I originally built it as a "board track" style bike, but now wanting to go deeper! Eyeballing at the moment, cutting and grooming to come! Hey, us "Survivor" guys like to have fun to!

I just wish it was chro-moly to stand up to the abuse I plan to put to this bike. Fortunately a friend has a chro-moly fork to trade that I will paint to match the frame.😉

My 39 Elgin last year, I'm too old and tall to do the board track look. Rear fender was a Roadmaster front. Bike has since been parted out due to the frame being bent.
