Finally riding a big boys bike
I Know what it is not. It is not traveling far--just around a swimming pool.

Rita Hayworth at the Beverly Hills Hotel.
Nice detective work Old Marine! A beautiful woman on a beautiful bike. But I am a bit skeptical of riding on a pool deck and of some of the New Departure claims for their coaster brakes. "Not affected by weather conditions" rings true. But the other claims seem hyperbolic at best:
  • the perfect speed control device
  • easier to operate
  • lighter weight
  • cost less
  • 90% greater braking power
If we give New Departure's marketers the benefit of the doubt and assume that they were comparing their products to other coaster brakes there may be some bits of truth here. But I sense that they are hinting at the superiority of coaster brakes over caliper brakes. The issue there is that in emergency stopping rear brakes alone are deficient. The rear wheel locks up. When there are front and rear brakes the front brake does most of the stopping. I have a number of bikes with coaster brakes but add a front caliper brake when it is practical and does not interfere with style or authenticity.

Sorry I hijacked this thread but feel relieved to get that off my chest. To get back to the beginning, a beautiful woman on a beautiful bike. Have fun!

I'm with you on brakes, but luckily I don't think Rita was in any danger. Sun burn maybe.
