On Training Wheels
I was looking for a beater bike. A friend said I could have this bike. I would like to know what I have before I thought about making any changes to it. Most of the decals have come off, and I have no idea what it is. (Other than a Schwinn obviously). The serial number is unusual from my research. I could not find it on the serial number list on this site. Any information on this bike would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!!

Looking at the stem I'd say that was from the 90's. Too new for me to identify. Build date is stamped in the head badge, 3352? What ever it is, it would be considered the next years model with that late year build.

Thank you for the info! The badge number is actually 3552, but that would make your statement about being considered the next year would be even truer with that number correct?

Definitely. And it takes some time to ship it across the pond. Have you found any catalogs for this period?

I have looked at some Head Badge history, and I think it may be from the 80's. It has Shimano Altus LT derailleurs. Do you know what years they used the Altus LT? The S in the serial number was throwing me also. I read this article http://re-cycle.com/History/Schwinn/SwnB_Serial.aspx and it sounds like maybe 1982 Le tour. Is that possible? That would also make sense with the head badge number being 355th day of 1982. Is that a possibility?

Over the years Schwinn normally started production of the next year's models with bikes wearing serial numbers that were stamped in November and December. Your late 82 build date would in most cases make the bike an 83 model. I went thru the 83 catalog and came to the conclusion it is a Le Tour matching up what I could.

1983 Catalog scan.
