What kind of seat post did I find?

I was going to change the seat on a 37' LaSalle and when I pulled the seat off it looked like someone had rigged a post in the tube. The seat bolt sat in the groove. When pulling it out I thought it was just a long post but then the bolt on the end appeared. It has something sliding back and forth. The inside tube goes in and pops out like it is on a spring. Any information is greatly appreciated.

Thank you. Wow, I was not expecting that. Any ideas how to take one apart so I can see what piece is sliding back and forth? It doesn't look like it was cut so did this post stick out more or was there another piece that is missing? Thank you
