What size handlebars on 50's bikes?

I was just wondering, both of my 50's balloon'ers have very large handlebars, they are about 28" across. Did most 50's ballooner's come with that size bars? Also, one of my handlebar stems is very long compared to the others Ive seen, what gives with the super long stems

Long neck

I'm not sure about the bars but some paper boy bike models had very long stems to keep the paper bag off the front fender.
