I picked up this bike today and cannot find a serial number on it. There is a number on the side of the frame by the rear axle. Help please

So what is that number? pic? The bike looks foreign made-might be an Austrian Higgins. Most likely late '50s/very early '60s. V/r Shawn

Yeah, lugged frame usually = foreign manufactured. But don’t let that get you down - this bike is sweet! Nice stand, too. Pletcher?

The Sportflite model was new for '58, a junior line to the Flightliner. But those were made by Murray in their new Lawrenceburg, TN plant. Assume they moved the name to this Euro built bike a year or three after that. That looks like the same frame design that was later made in Hungary/Czech under the Rapido name.

My hunch is with that lugged frame style and one piece crank, chain ring and hardware is that it's a CCM product.
The chainring on your bike was also used in Canada on CCM built Supercycle branded bikes in the day.
The same frame style was also offered in different sizes/models in the '60s.

It looks like the frame is the same as what was used to build the early 60s CCM Catalina. Serial number could be the rear dropout or the seat tube. The kidney bean chainring was commonly used on their rebranded bikes after 1935
