which old bikes had thr shifters on the frame?

-
well, 1933 and earlier... Elgin Chief (tri-coaster) and same for the 3 -spd Napoleon.

Like Bri said Sturmey Archer (SA) introduced a 3speed that could be fitted to most bikes. 1938 New Departure (ND) introduced the 2 speed which could also be fitted to most bikes. My '38 Iver Johnson Super Mobike with ND 2spd and '40 Columbia Superb with SA 3spd. V/r Shawn

should be noted that corbin had an early kick back hub so no shifter. also there was a two speed hiwheel hub but it was again shifted I think before you mounted. Meads were tri coasted equipped--early on teens or earlier

Any bike that used the Sturmey Archer quadrant shifter would have that shifter on the top tube. Those were used mostly in the 30's, with the SA K-series hubs. This bike is a 1925 Granby, made in England, that was updated in 1934 with the SA hub and shifter.
