Cruisin' on my Bluebird
First off - DOES ANYONE have an identifying name and manufacturer, country made in, date(s) produced, literature, ad's or pic's of this really cool tire driven whistle?
Obviously TOC era due to handle bar stem and fork blade mounting clasps but could be earlier from earlier 1880's -1892 bicycles.
Mounts to handle bar stem at top and fork leg at bottom.
You can get the visual scale of the size of this unit from the photos attached.
Working principal is: A hand actuated push rod engages a small wheel against the rotating tire of the bicycle. This small wheel actuates the mechanism to a piston within the cylinder thus creating intake and exhaust of air for each revolution of this small wheel. The exhausted air is channeled through a U-bent tube to the whistle orifice slit thus creating the whistling sound. Makes numerous whistle sounds for each bicycle tire rotation due to small wheel vs bicycle tire circumferences. Will whistle for short bursts or continually as long as there is slight hand pressure applied to the push rod.
Secondly - II am considering offering a LIMITED RUN of exact reproductions from this original whistle depending on response from CABE members.
I can offer them as COMPLETED UNITS - OR - as a DIY PROJECT for you tinkerer/machinist types.
Thanks,
Mike Cates, CA.
Matt, Jesse, Brant, Jeff, Catfish & other contributors, GOT ANYTHING ON THIS???
