The American has the wrong front hub. That is a one piece Schwinn hub made in Germany. Schwinn used a cheaper US made 3 piece hub on the American, otherwise it wouldn’t be all American made. Front wheel likely replaced. Check your original Americans and see if I’m right!😎
Since day one the Corvette and American had the Schwinn made Schwinn script front hub. Sometime around 1962 that hub became the Schwinn script Approved hub that was used on the later Corvette, Jag and American. Part #4901. I have yet to find out who was making those hubs for Schwinn. Same hub but they were outsourced.

I think he is right! An American had a cheap looking "made in USA" front hub in 1962. I believe they started using the script front hub in 1963

Something was sure going on then. Was that hub made by Bendix? Here is Tim s's 62 American. What's funny is the 63 Corvette in this thread must have had the front wheel swapped out too.

Thanks for the pics! Any idea who the manufacturer was? Excel? Schwinn was making their hubs as far back as 1939 and then the expander brake hubs. So sometime around 1962? it must have been cheaper to outsource their standard front Schwinn script hub. Not that it means anything, but I've seen the Schwinn script front hubs on quite a few later Americans. If these were Union made Schwinn Approved, then I would think they would not have left the factory with those hubs.
 
Well what I can tell you is that two Americans I've had so far have had this "made in USA" hubs. One was a J1 stamped Girls 26" American and the other was an H2 Stamped boys 26" Deluxe American. I've also read that in 1963 the American used the script hub with replaceable cups. I don't know what they mean by that. On an interesting note I have found two 1961 Schwinns with the script Approved hub. One was a C1 stamped frame, the other was a L1 stamped frame. When exactly did Schwinn switch over to the Schwinn Approved Script Hub.
 
I had a 20" Speedster with the Schwinn Approved front hub.

Can't find them at the moment, but somewhere I have pictures of a friend's 61 wheels that had that hub with a 61 dated union axle that I believe was original to it. Check your axles for marks if they appear original.

I just checked that Schwinn Approved Hub that came off a C1 Stamped Schwinn frame and the axle is stamped "Schwinn Approved Germany 9-60" and has the unions U stamped on it
