it's often complained that California is buying all the good bikes etc..
one of California's other imported treasures was Huell Howser.
here's an old episode of California's Gold with Huell from back in 2004.
if you grew up in California, you've grown up with this show.

It's like liquid crack ! Totally addictive and awesome with spiced rum.

I was just thinking maybe I should explain a little.
Huell Howser was a T.V. pioneer. his show was on PBS and was geared toward all audiences. Huell, with his southern drawl, and his "Howdy neighbor" demeanor asked the questions every 10 year old would have asked, in just the way they would have asked it, yet it wasn't really a kids show. he was loved by young and old alike. later it became a common practice that the host of a show acted like an idiot so he could more effectively ask questions that the audience wanted to know the answer to. Bob Vila comes to mind, but Huell was a master of the technique. with Huell it came off as wide eyed innocence rather than feigned stupidity.
I have an uncle who in his 70s would just about hang up on you if you tried to call when California's Gold was on.
it was a show that hearkened back to a nicer, more innocent time. it was a sad day when the news told us Huell had passed away.

Retirement and death

On November 27, 2012, the Sacramento Bee reported that Howser was retiring from making new shows, amid speculation in the television community that he was seriously ill. Howser died at the age of 67 at his Palm Springs home on January 7, 2013. He had been battling cancer for several years, and his death certificate listed metastatic prostate cancer as the cause of death. His body was cremated and his ashes were scattered at sea off the coast of Los Angeles County.
