Riding a '38 Autocycle Deluxe
Another one in the books!
My rare 1942 Hawthorne All American

This was "stripped down" version due to war time rationing
This particular does not have the usual All American accessories; Torrington Signal pedals, full chrome chain guard or rims..both painted..
painted truss rods instead of chrome, slightly smaller handlebars..yes..2 inches shorter..(To save on steel?) and non deluxe stem

ALSO the frame was partially "pieced" together.. THIS particular frame broke in 2 spots on the top tube (Now repaired) and from seat mast area to fender bridge is "pieced" together..I noticed that when frame was in the stand upside down

This bike also came with white grips..(there was barely any left of the originals)
The only non original pieces to this bike are a better set of original paint white truss rods, reproduction white Hawthorne grips,a near NOS set of Torrington #8s and a paint blend where frame was repaired . I ALSO added my reproduction "Remember Pearl Harbor" decal on back fender

Super cool bike! Now I have a 1940 AA,2 1941 AAs and a now a 42 !

Special thanks to @soulshine73 for selling me the bike (We both were after it when it got listed lol) @fordmike65 for the grips and @catfish for hooking me up with the frame repair and a Wise lock key!

Next up my 1937 Hawthorne Air-Flo !

How does that Springer work? It looks like the wheel is completely solid mounted.
Not that good, but the excellent ride and look of these bikes make up for it. The fork was originally produced in 1938 to compete with Schwinn's springer, was first produced without truss rods for only that year. I love the looks of them. I've had two bikes with them. Extremely hard to remove or replace the wheel. Pretty sure the spring is the same one used in the later 1950's boy's "Schwinn looking" springer. Easiest way to remove wheel without damaging your knuckles is to turn the bike upside down, and tie a short piece of rope to one of the fork ends. Tie the other end to a door knob or fence post. After unbolting the wheel, pull the other side of the fork out. As far as looks, this is one of my favorite bikes. Love the tank.

Reminds me I had this one quite a while back. I miss every single bike I've ever had!--
