| For Your Consideration: A true time capsule bicycle dating originally from the early 1940's during the United States involvement in WW2. This bicycle was issued to the Wright Patterson Air Force Base (Originally Wilbur Wright Field) and remained on base and in-use until the 1970's. The story that is passed along with this bike is written out by the son of the last generation of military personnel to ride the bike. This bicycle remained in the Paint Shop building where the stencils on the handlebars and both fenders indicate it was in use. The head of the paint shop ordered it be tossed in the garbage after over 30 years in service so it was brought to a garage and fortunately saved. Prior to that the story must be pieced together from paperwork and not from primary first person accounts. We know that the outermost paint color was applied in 1950 as a post-war effort, as indicated in the documents attached, and is called "Strato Blue." From period accounts there is some consensus that the yellow paint scheme beneath the blue likely indicates this bicycle's use as a runway bike. Bicycles and automobiles were often painted yellow and orange in this period if they were to be used on the runway out of an interest in visibility and safety. Also attached is a document showing Building 105 where this bicycle was in service. Paired with this bicycle and included in the sale is an exceptional US Army Air Corps ID badge from Wright Patterson and in keeping with the period of the bike as well as a period oil cloth and tin tool pouch for which to display this fine badge. A more honest representation of the United States military bicycle tradition does not exist. Untouched example, the only addition appears to be tires which were likely worn to threads. The bicycle does feature multiple repairs likely all done in the name of god and country, they do not detract from the bike in the least. Given how delicate the multiple coats of paint can be I would prefer not to ship this bike, I could assist in handling in a variety of areas, please reach out to discuss as I will list it as local pick up only with the caveat that we can discuss options. |
