Well…Its not a Hawthorne Zep or even a Hawthorne but that’s what most people will call it based on its general similarity to a 1937 Zep (the 1938 Hawthorne Zep was based on a completely different frame.)

This particular bike is an H.P Snyder built bike, badged as a Harvard, and it probably dates to 1939 or 1940 based on the trussrod and front fender bracket configuration.

Ok cool I had no idea thanks for the info it's the same tank isn't it ?

No, it's not the same tank as the one used on a 1937 Hawthorne Zep. A 1937 Zep tank has three vertical louvers in front and does not have the anti-sway bracket in the rear (but, it is the same basic shape and they will interchange physically.)

The 1937 Zep is just one specific version of the much broader and longer production of H.P. Snyder built bicycles that use what I refer to as the Snyder Fastback Sport frame. While your bike is very similar to a 1937 Zep, the parts on it that are identical are actually very few in number. The frame, the fork, all of the sheet metal, the truss rods, the chainring, and that dropstand, stem and seat are all different than those used on the actual 1937 Zep.

All of the sheet metal Phil? Doesn't the Zep have a different chain guard, rear rack, and rear fender?

I hate to say it...

But if you decide to part it out, which in all honesty I hope you don't, I believe that tank would fit my Snyder built Wards-Hawthorne. Been looking for a tank for a while.

Only if you have to part it out, please just put me at the front of the line for the tank. Good luck with the sale. If I had the cash at moment I'd take it off your hands for you. I love those style of frames.

thanks, judd
