The chainring also has initials engraved on it as does the seat post clamp. In some places, the police encouraged people taking the electropen to the bike and engraving names, initials, etc. I remember about 20 years ago in DC, I went to register my bike and the officer pulled out the electro pen and put a number on the bottom of the bottom tube for additional identification purposes. I also have an old Schwinn that wan owned by someone in Oakland, CA, that had a supplemental ID number stamped on the side of the head tube. I also owned a Schwinn that had a student ID number or DL number on the handlebars.
