1965 Schwinn American

I sold a 65 American to a friend and he wants it gone so I might buy it back. It has the springer front and that is how I got it 6-8 years ago. I was thinking about adding a tank but will just leave it as it should be. Are the A 16 Deluxe Americans any more valuable because of that option? Thanks for all the input everyone. Tim

Yes, a tank would add its own value to any bike...but that frame is not equipped to take a slimline tank. There are special factory welded on tabs that are required to mount a slimline tank.

I am familiar with the tabs and have a set that I was going to use in order to mount a tank if it was an original option. Since it was not an option I don’t want to alter the bike. Thanks for posting pics of the tabs on a frame, which model is yours? Tim

This is just an image I borrowed from google. Altering a bike with that nice of original paint with welding burns would be a shame, I'm glad you decided against it.

Does anyone know when Schwinn stoped using/making the 26" springe? I know it was sometime in the late 60s - early 70s and then in was brought back in the early 1980s

The 1959 Phantom is the last model that had a Springer a standard equipment. Springer‘s were optional equipment that could be ordered but Schwinn did not build bikes with a standard springer option until 1964 on the Jaguar. That was a one year deal. It wasn’t seen again until the deluxe cruiser came out. But for years it was an accessory that could be purchased at a dealer.
