Nice! I had a violet '67 Collegiate a while back. It had different pedals where the blocks could spin on the bolts, and my knee sometimes knocked it out of gear when pedaling out of the saddle. Once I landed hard on the top tube (missed my jewels, thankfully) in the middle of a busy intersection because my foot slipped off the pedal when the blocks rolled after my knee knocked it between gears. I lost some love for the bike after that, and eventually sold it. If I had the sense to swap the pedals and shifter... Anyhow, enjoy it!

You must have had a 1966 model with the shifter that was still on the top tube. The 67's shifter was attached to the stem.

A couple noteworthy Schwinn changes in 1966 & 1967.

Different paint in ‘66.
Different grips in late ‘67.

Spin block pedals were last offered in 1964 because of the slippage you described.
Very late 1964 and beyond the pedals had one or both end plates crimped over the square ends of the blocks. No more slip.

Spinning pedal blocks really annoy me when I find them on a bike. My go-to pedals are new production MKS 3000S from Japan. They make them in 1/2" spindle and 9/16" spindle varieties.

Mine had the stem shifter--that was actually the problem, I didn't do a good job describing what would happen: By "out of the saddle," I'm talking standing straight up, pulling the bars up with my hands while pushing down on the forward pedal, and doing my best to get out of dodge. Kind of like climbing a steep hill. Well when I'm cranking like that, the bike is turning side to side to compensate for the torque I'm laying down (makes me sound big and strong, but I'm neither). So the perfect storm happens when the bars turn a little to the left, and my right knee or thigh is where the shifter happens to be. Friction shifting, no dentents = pops out of gear, and right foot goes straight down and off the pedal.
