Schwinn Sales West said above that Campy made end caps with a set screw.

-----

yes, thank you

had read Schwinn Sales West's post and did not find it a complete answer

this is because:

a) had seen the metal end caps with set screw in at least three designs

b) have been through all of the Campag back catalogues going into the 1950's without ever seeing of product of this type shown

c) if item came through Campag it is possible it was something stocked by a national Campag entity such as Brevo Italia but not an actual Campag product

d) there have been Campag items which were "catalogue orphans" - never getting into a catalogue due to being launched shortly after the publication of one and then being discontinued prior to the publication of the next; the Sportman model rear gear mech is one such product; it launched shortly following the publication of catalogue Nr. 14 and was long gone by the publication of catalogue Nr. 15

e) there have been Campag items which never got into a catalogue because they were offered only at the OEM level and were hence not included in catalogues intended for the public; there was a whole family of economy shift levers which fell into this category during the 1960's; they were the antecedants of what became the Valentino (and subsequently the NGS model) toward the end of the '60s

i began a forum discussion thread to consider them here:

hence it was for these reasons that i posted me question

always value and appreciate the information of Schwinn Sales West since he is "trade" and am only an ignorant hobbyist meself

Sorry, didn't mean to derail your question.

We're fortunate that people like Schwinn Sales West share their expertise and knowledge on this forum. I had a local guru, the now-retired owner of the local Schwinn Dealership, Eddy's Cycle City. He was in the business from late 60's until 2019, and saw everything from Varsities/Krates through carbon fiber. He was always willing to patiently lend his mechanical expertise and answer questions. Schwinn Sales West reminds me a great deal of him.
