I came across the 1981 Schwinn Sting at a garage sale a couple years back. The man putting on the sale said the bike belonged to his son and it wasn't for sale. After a couple years of contact with the father, he passed his sons contact information to me and the son is willing to take the bike down to let me take a good look at it and possibly buy it. I'm not really knowledgeable on vintage bmx so I was wondering what this bicycle is worth so I don't go in blind. I cant really find a price comparison other what one is listed for on ebay. I appreciate any help! Hopefully I can make a deal on it.

Hand made, exotic to the BMX world. Highly desirable to BMX collectors of 20" BMX bikes. Very rare in really good original condition.
I sold a hashed 1979 model two years ago with very few original parts for $350 in 30 minutes when I tried to sell it. I undersold it and could have got more if I tried.

With the BMX market blowing up right now, and the condition that one is in, I would say that one is at the top end. Retail, with a little time and patience, I wouldn't be surprised if that was a $3500 bike.
But, you'll need to jump into the BMX crowd. The CABE is not the best place although there are a few here that really go for them.
No telling, but I'd pay $800, maybe a thou on a wholesale find like this.
If he asks for an offer, I'd start at $500 and judge his response. He may know what's up.
bmx market is steady.. has rises and falls.. entire collections up for sale as old bmxers are passing.. I would say as far as 70s and 80s items, its a buyers market at present. And yes, the wheels are the star of that show, araya 7x, 700 alone.. parting it out will bring double but IMO its a bmx crime.. I have never 'parted out' a bike.. I build them to undo what people did for profit.

putting this together now, just ordered the seat post and again, the steel cmc 7x wheels are the star of the show, along with the 81 tange forks.. seat post ordered..
