Put some items through an Evaporust soak today. Always amazing finding sunken treasure at the bottom of the pan.

The main part of the stem and the other pedal are still soaking.

I polished up the license plate.

I haven’t tried to vice pry the caps off the pedals yet. The Evaporust soak really cleaned them up. I hope I can get them apart for a rebuild. The pedal axle hub is marked “notario”. Spanish pedals huh…. Cool!😎

Are you going to attack the red reflective competition stripes on the fenders? It looks like it’s going to be a lot of work.

Polished up a bunch of parts that had soaked in Evaporust. Treated them all with Rust Preventative Magic.

I ran the cross threaded/ wrong nut mangled end on this seat part through the die and it managed to save it. Ran the tap through all the nuts too. 😃

Soaking tub for the chain guard and truss rods.

Filled up with Evaporust.

Covered to soak while I washed the rest of the bike finally.

This rear dropout wiggles freely in both stays. ☹️ How do people deal with that? Does it need to be tack welded?

Some pics of the tires. They are heavy.

The chain guard and truss rods came out of the soak looking nice, and even nicer after some rubbing compound and wax. Super careful with the decal and it looks bright and clean now.

Nice pickup, especially being a black bike. I always liked the Columbia Newsboy models and came close to buying a blue one with the curved middle bar a while back.

Regarding the rear dropouts, can you see evidence of a spot weld?

Hi @ozzie I took a few shots of both of the dropouts but it’s still a little dirty to see exactly what is going on. It looks like there are small circular spots where the stays got crimped (and spot welded simultaneously?) to the drop outs. On the one side these spots are no longer holding the drop out firmly and I can wiggle it back and forth. I believe this is the good side:

I noticed that dropout in the sellers eBay listing. 😟

One of the reasons I like Schwinns. 😜 The good is the frame is Black! Do a hot OA soak on just the rear fork ends in a small bucket for 2/3 hours. Rinse, blow dry and then wipe in some Phosphoric acid metal prep. Then hit the dropouts with a torch and do a little brazing with the frame in a position to where the material runs down into the stays. Then get creative and do an overspray of black enamel paint. A rag soaked in a solvent will easily remove any new paint where you don't want it.
