Cruisin' on my Bluebird
DEAL OR NO DEAL
"THE VICTOR" OIL LAMP MADE BY THE BUFFALO SEAL & PRESS CO. BUFFALO, N.Y. (ca. 1897 due to earlier design variances).
FOR YOUR REFERENCE, MY PHOTOS ARE TAKEN ON A BROWN, TAN, BEIGE AND WHITE CHECKERED TABLE CLOTH. THE OTHER PHOTOS ARE FROM THE BUFFALO LAMP THAT SOLD ON THIS SAME DOND THREAD APRIL 22, 2022. JUST SEARCH "ALUMINUM OIL LAMP" IN THE SEARCH BAR TO BRING IT UP QUICKER FROM 2022.
This,"THE VICTOR", is the EARLIER VERSION of the later "THE BUFFALO" oil lamp that sold on this DOND thread April 22, 2022.
Credit in this posting is given to Peter Card showing with my posted photos and information from his book "EARLY CYCLE LIGHTING 1868-1948 PETER W. CARD (SEE PHOTOS FROM HIS BOOK). YOU NEED ONE OF THESE BOOKS IF YOU ARE INTO BICYCLE LAMPS........PERIOD.
FROM IT'S PRISTINE CONDITION, AND NEVER BEEN LIT WITH UN CHARRED WICK,CLEAN OIL TANK AND NO RESIDUE WITHIN CHIMNEY, I CONSIDER THIS A NOS CONDITION LAMP.
VARIANCES INCLUDE:
Top of chimney cap embossed lettering saying “THE VICTOR” varying from the later THE BUFFALO lamp. (SEE COMPARISON PHOTOS).
My oil tank is radially stamped “USE LARD OIL” and can't see THE BUFFALO oil tank top in past thread photos to see if it varies. The burner removes easily from the tank with original wick and top seal in good condition. It is the "pick wick" type so a straight pin is used to set wick height correctly to the burner tip.
THE VICTOR lamp has PATs APPd FOR stamped radially around the mounting clamp screw varying from the later BUFFALO lamp having company name now radially stamped around the mounting clamp screw. Mine has the original thumb screw rather than the slotted round head screw shown on THE BUFFALO. (SEE COMPARISON PHOTOS).
PATs APPd FOR are seen on the first run of any product making this the first example and reference in Peter Card's book. (SEE COMPARISON PHOTOS).
THE VICTOR chimney cap doesn't have the additional perforations around the sides of the top rim like THE BUFFALO lamp does for heat convection exhaust meaning this is the first design and it's testing by cyclists hadn't happened enough yet to give feed back to the manufacturer as to it getting too hot thus resulting in the addition of more exhaust holes on THE BUFFALO lamp. (SEE COMPARISON PHOTOS).
FRONT LENS is fine and just cloudy from finger prints and would clean up fine. I wanted to leave the lamp in "as found condition" for lamp collectors rather than polish it up.
Side ruby red marker lenses are fine. The right side lens slides smoothly in it's frame up and down vertically to allow access for stick match when lighting the lamp.
This THE VICTOR lamp would be a great accessory for a LU-MI-NUM bicycle OR any aluminum or streamline space age bicycle as was THE BUFFALO lamp that sold....... OR........is a perfect example showing a progression of this aluminum lamp from it's beginnings for a lamp collection.
USPS PRIORITY FLAT RATE SHIPPING WITHIN THE US and I WILL SHIP WORLD WIDE AND IF AN OUT OF COUNTRY BUYER HAS A SHIP TO ADDRESS WITHIN THE USA IT WILL MAKE THINGS EASIER AND SAVE ON CUSTOMS DUTIES, FORMS, ETC AND THE SHIPPING RATE WILL VARY WITH BUYER'S LOCATION. It's weight is a light 5 oz!! as described on THE BUFFALO lamp that sold 2years ago on this DOND thread April 22, 2022.
