Bendix or New Departure

Questions for the SMEs. When did Schwinn switch from New Departure D to Bendix coaster brakes on the Phantom Bikes ?

I dont have photos, its just a question.

In the 14yrs I've been here no one has ever used SME. What does that mean??

Personally, I have two Phantoms, the early '50's bike is ND and the '58 is Bendix.

Not a SME but I believe the Bendix coaster hub was introduced as an option beginning in 46 on any balloon model.

Not a Phantom but my '51 Panther (with Phantom seat and rack) was originally equipped with a Bendix hub.
