Livermore, California reportedly has the highest concentration of PhD's per capita of any town in the U.S. - assumed to be due to presence of the Lawrence Livermore Radiation Laboratory - known locally as "the rad lab"

I love this history stuff. Sumners bike shop; still in the biz but mostly repair work now. Long-time owner can rebuild New Departure, Bendix 2-speed kickbacks, all the old stuff.
He leaves a “yard art” cruiser out front daily.

The east side of that building housed Sumner's Suzuki that Ed and his son ran. I believe it was Dave that ran the Schwinn side of the building. I called on that store 46 years ago for Schwinn Sales West. Doug Watson ran Green's Schwinn Cyclery was just north, but was torn down by the new freeway expansion. Anybody remember Scobee's Schwinn in Fresno?

Last time I was at Sumner's a guy named David was still running the shop. Message me if you want his phone #.

I've fond memories of Scobee's Schwinn. My family and my wife's family got all our Schwinn bikes from Scobee's, including my early 70s Heavy Duti Fresno Bee route bike. At that time the shop was at the NW corner of Shields & Thorne Ave., previous to that maybe at Shields & Fruit(?). I think they had a location on Palm Ave near Fresno High before that.

Here's a bike from Scobee's found by a Fresno CABE'r https://thecabe.com/forum/threads/nervous-in-suburbia-1973-suburban.215945/

Stanyan Street borders Golden Gate Park

there is a long tradition of closing off the streets within the park to vehicular traffic on Sundays

people from surrounding cities bring their cycles to the park to ride around on that day of the week

its proximinity to the park gave Stanyan Street an impetus to become a kind of "auto row" for bicycles with six or eight shops concentrated in a three or four block stretch

in addition to sales and repair there is a rental business

Kezar Stadium is right there as well...

on the above map Golden Gate Park is centre left

Stanyan Street runs N & S at the eastern end of the park

in the lower right corner of the park can be seen a small green oval; that is Kezar Stadium

it is still in use today

the San Francisco 49ers played their home games there until 1971 when they moved to Candlestick Park

the Oakland Raiders played their first four home games there in their initial season of 1960

right next to the stadium was located Oscar Junor's American Cyclery - a shop beloved by vintage bicycle fans for its inventory of NOS parts from yesteryear
