the above picture is a well known example of schwinn 'printing error'. in their haste-schwinn advertising department- to get new models to the printer they sometimes used the wrong/something close to picture. above picture is a 'c97' advertised as a 'bc97'. the bc model is a 'b' frame with the arrowhead paint scheme. other infamous error printings are the of the dx when it debuted in late 1938(which is when the 1939 model dx came out) they used a picture of a 'c' model and called it the 'christmas special'. the push was to get the new dx out there! there were no pictures of the dx yet and they used what they had-a picture of the c model. simple. collectors have been fooled by this one many times-thinking they have something special-when all they have is a c model. other bloppers are the picture of a clamp-on tank(2 piece) with hanging straps in the 40 catalog-it even has tank to fender tube! minor errors must be over-looked. this topic of 'is it a c or a bc model' has been beat to death many times here on the cabe. look at the frame-is it a b-c-d? there is the answer-this is basic 'schwinn i.d. 101! relax everyone!

as far as serial numbers lists go-they are a basic guide. aside from over-lapping years etc the lists were created by one individual who thru talks with many collectors at the time-came up with the list now posted here on the cabe under 'all things schwinn'-serial numbers and see pge #2. at the time the lists were made up there was confusion and a great desire to unravel the mystery of what the numbers and letters meant. the prefix letter showed up for several known years. the numbers seemed to be used over and over-large and small. that individual was supplied with about 500 serial numbers with descriptions of the bikes-things like model numbers weren't being paid attention to. it was a monumental task and a great effort to give the prewar schwinn bike collecting community 'something'. there seemed to be many inconsistancies and others tried coming up with their own lists-based on direct observation-all the lists have merit-yes-there tends to be the same 'vibe' amongst all of them. use them as a guide/draw your own conclusion. with basic schwinn knowledge as to when frames came out and the parts-when they came out.....i say-look at the frame first then look at the parts on it and 99% of the time the year of the bike will be clear.
