Cruisin' on my Bluebird
Finally got around to looking at the serial # on a Schwinn ladies model I picked up many years ago and wanted to see if the year can be identified. The serial # is H29426. I was guessing 1939 because one of the collector books I have has a 1939 catalog page showing this exact frame design and paint scheme. However, I'm figuring this model could have been produced for more than one year. Also, what type of oil or lube should be put in the rear hub lube port. I've heard some collectors put in about 10 drops of kerosene, but I didn't want to put the wrong type of lube in. The brake is a little stiff but works, and the bicycle still rides good. Thanks!

Thank you for the fast reply! From the charts, it looks like the 1941 year is right on the mark! When I bought it at an indoor flea market the seller had a tag saying it was a "1950s girls bike". It looked earlier than that to me, so I went home and checked the collector books. When I saw a model like it from 1939 I went back to the market and bought it. They were only asking $50 for it. I've put another $75 into it with replacement tires (originals were dry rotted), identical replacement Mesinger B-80 saddle (original seat top was torn up), and replacement Schwinn grips.

I wouldn't worry too much about the grease. Dismantle the crank assembly and the head tube assembly and degrease them completely. Any good automotive grease will be fine when you put them back together. If you choose to do a complete PM on the hubs, a good automotive grease in moderation is fine for the front hub but a disc brake grease used in moderation would be a good pick for the coaster brake hub. Nice bike!

It seems you have a lot to learn about Schwinn serial numbers. Your biggest mistake is using that look up site for a bike that was built before World War II, or for any other year for that matter. Use the actual posted Schwinn serial list and you’ll be in the know.

Yeah, that "lookup" site where you type your serial in is infamous for how wrong it is. The factory's information is lost. Everything is reconstruction, and there are problems. The serial number threads here on the CABE are as good as it gets. I vote for 1941. The crank might have a date on it. No way could it's frame have rear forks like the ones shown in the pictures if it was built in 1953.

That page does more of a disservice than provide any real help unless you first know what you are looking at. If you don't understand the difference between a pre war and post war bike and where the serial numbers are located the SN Lookup is a crap shoot. Obviously this bike is prewar and I agree with the '41 assessment.
